Sports Track Grand Opening & Summer BBQ

27th June 2018
A great day was had by all for our grand opening of our new sports track on Wednesday.  Thomas Mein a local rider, who has competed for Great Britain in cycling, came along to talk to us and give us a demonstration.  Thomas cut the ribbon and did the first timed laps of our track.  Anna Foster from BBC Newcastle came along and brought a touch of showbiz to the event interviewing Thomas to find out how he got to where he is now.  Hopefully they both helped to inspire the next generation of cyclists.  Dave Buchan from Bike4Health gave the children cycling tips & skills throughout the day including visiting children from St. Michael's Primary.  During his interview he told us how one of his teachers inspired him when he was younger.

Things started to get competitive when the fire service and the police went head to head for the fastest lap time, Dave Buchan was close, but no one could beat Thomas. Two of the children who had recently cycled to Amsterdam on the Y6 residential also did a timed lap, followed by some of the parents as the afternoon went on and the summer BBQ began.  All of the lap times went up on our Hall of Fame, our version of Top Gear's 'Star in a reasonably priced car' - 'Tike on a reasonably priced bike'.

Many thanks to everyone who came along to make the day so special it really was a fantastic event, including; Bike4Health & Dr Bike, Cycling UK, British Cycling, the Fire Service and the Police who security marked the children's bikes.

A special mention and thank you goes to Start Cycles who donated the prize of a bike for our raffle. Thanks also to Marion Talbot who contributed to the funds for the track and a huge, huge thank you to the families past and present and Parents & Friends of Sacred Heart who have saved and fundraised to contribute to the cost of the track - we really couldn't have done it without your efforts over the years!

Many thanks to all of the parents and staff who came together to organize and man the stalls for our summer fayre which was a good fun as we all baked in the sun.  Thanks also to everyone who came and spent money to start our new fundraising efforts it was an excellent turn out and a great success.
We raised a grand total of £1351 towards our next venture to build an outdoor classroom.
